The relationship between HIV and stigma is complex and cyclical. People living with HIV are often stigmatized because of their status. And people who experience stigma are at a higher risk of contracting HIV. This is because stigma can lead to marginalization, which in turn can lead to violence, risky behaviors, poverty, and less engagement with healthcare. Share this post to raise awareness about the relationship between stigma and HIV. #ThisIsWhatWeLiveFor #EndHIVStigma #HIV #AIDS #EndTheEpidemic #GileadHIV #HIVAwareness

When someone goes to the hospital, a doctor’s office, or an urgent care clinic, there is so much more to their experience than getting treatment. There are interactions, moments of human connection, and opportunities to change the course of history.

There are interactions, moments of human connection, and opportunities to change the course of history. Cultural competence and, better yet, cultural humility are not just important tools to help end the HIV epidemic — they establish the mindset we must internalize and act on to help put an end to the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black Americans and other people of color. #ThisIsWhatWeLiveFor #GileadHIV #EndTheEpidemic #CulturalHumility #CulturalCompetency #EndHIVStigma

Individual biases contribute to stigma, which impacts healthcare on a systemic level. For people living with or at risk for HIV, stigma often makes it difficult to access care or get the help they need. And for many, their gender, race or sexuality lead to additional layers of stigma that can further impact the care they receive and their health outcomes. All of us can play a role in holistically improving HIV care by working to end stigma and bias within the medical world and beyond. Share this post to help raise awareness.

HIV stigma has its origins in the beginning of the epidemic before people knew much about the virus. Although science has since debunked the myths that contributed to stigma in the 80s, it is still a barrier to putting HIV and its impact in the past
